How to use Majestic SEO to improve your linkbuilding.

Majestic is the world’s largest Private Search Engine and a great resource for marketing specialists.  Majestic has 500 000 000 tweets per day on average. At the same time, Majestic crawls well over 2 000 000 000 new URLs (and sees 7 billions) per day.

Mahestic SEO

At first, let’s see why links are so important. There is much more information in a link, than you might think.  If you look at the link on the page, you can sees something about content, relevance, reach, influence, intent, timeliness, meaning, power, context, passion. There is a lot more, than just a link itself, so links are important and they are the only thing you can get around the Internet.

How do search engines work?

As SEO we look at how engines collect data, we also look at how it indexes data, how search rankings appear on the screen, and we spend time trying to get into user’s head trying to understand how the engine will match certain search query with the actual search results.

how do search engines work?

One more important thing is grouping algorithm.  This thing helps to respond and return information very quickly. If you understand this, you realize how search engines work and why grouping is important for the search engine.

Grouping make search much better

If you are going into a library, you need to find the mass of the Moon, and you do not have the Internet. So, you could take the first book and start looking for the mass of the Moon or you can go to the cabinet system and find section on astrophysics or about planets and to use that to narrow your search very quickly.

Grouping make search much better

So, grouping things first makes finding things much simpler and much faster. And it doesn’t matter whether you are looking for the mass of the Moon or for the consultant in any issue or the customer. We as human beings tend to firstly narrow our search before finding the answer, and search engines do the same things as well.

Why should we categorize the Web?

Another point is why categorizing things and topics before you create your search engine is effective in search. It prevents spam. You cannot suddenly create a web page that is nowhere. It is going to be relevant like all the other pages on the web site.

We also know that search engines categorize data in different ways. Google in Russia has different results to Google in UK or US. They have separate data structure of images, videos, maps, travel etc. Search engines find it easier to hold it in different indexes.  And they are organized indexes instead of unstructured data sets.

Search engines categorize data by the following types of data:

  • Country IP/TLD
  • Image Search
  • Video Search
  • Local listings
  • Map
  • Travel

Approaches to grouping topics

For SEO it’s more important to understand how search engine categorize things by topic. The most famous ways of grouping things by topic was Yahoo directory, there were all the web sites on the Internet and they were grouped by topic. Unfortunately, this is not stable, as it was not about web site but about web page and there are too many pages on the web, as well as too many web sites.

Grouping make search much better

Approaches to defining topics

We thin that Google has used a different approach. They find out there are words similar to each other. They associate these words with topics and the categories. So, they got a pretty good understanding on what it is that you are looking for within a few words. They spent a lot of time trying to get their topics based on these words. It turned to be very difficult to do, so we used different approach. We used another way of categorizing the web, it turned to work very well and we are proud of it.

How we categorize the web?

We see that content tends to connect in groups. If you are a web site in an airplane industry, then there are quite a lot of chances that you will be connected with other sites about airplanes. This is the type correlation between topics and categories.

Majestic SEO Tools Overview.

Let’s talk about how we can use Majestic for SEO. I’ll be mostly talking about SEO for an agency; however it could be used for in-house SEO as well. Here are the main stages of business process SEO agencies usually face and here is how Majestic SEO can help at each of the stages.

SEO agency pitch phases

How Majectic cab help at the Pitch Phase of the SEO agency work?

If you are a SEO agency, at the beginning you are going to have a stage of prospecting business. You need to have an idea which sites are worth approaching for SEO and here is where Majestic tools can easily help.

Chrome and Firefox Plugin

So, first of all we have Chrome and Firefox Plugin, it allows you to get the key statistics across the web for any URL. So, if you need to go to Chrome or Firefox, download Majestic plugin or extension you need to click on that star I the corner and you can get information about any webpage in the world. You even don’t have to go to Majestic to get this information. It’s very useful. It does give you some data for free, but if you get your account, it gives you much more information.

Bulk Backlink Checker

Also if you are trying to analyze the industry, using Bulk Backlink Checker is a very quick way to see which sites are influential enough to do business with. You can find out that some sites are not as influential as they should be and others are more influential, than it seemed, so you can try pitching them for more money. So, if you analyze the full list of web sites of the industry using Bulk Backlink Checker it will give you the instant map of industry players’ influence.

So, these are the tools that allow you to pitch quickly and effectively using Majestic.

Backlink History Checker

One of the most popular tools of Majestic is Backlink History Checker. It is free and you don’t need an account to use it. It allows seeing link acquisition rate for up to 5 web sites over a 5-year-period.  It helps very well if someone comes to you and says I want to be number one in search for a particular word X, and then you come and see that there are competitors so much bigger than that client, so the chances are very little. This tool helps to establish whether you can realistically rank for this particularly word or not depending on the power of the company you are pitching to do business with. So, Backlink History Checker is a very useful tool, it has nice graphics, which you can use for your pitching presentations.

Also, if you go to Majestic and type in the web site name, a lot of people miss what’s below the fold. So, just scroll down and you find some other graphics that are also quite informative and could be used in your pitches.

Comparative charts

If you do have an account, it’s very easy to start comparing different tools as well. Recently we introduced a little button above domain search box saying COMPARE. It gives the opportunity to upload au to 5 different web sites next to each other and you can quickly compare many different things, such as summary data, which covers relative trust flows and citation flows, data from backlink history checker or topics checker and so on. So, this is a very useful tool for giving comparative charts and to understand where your client has to get to.

Tracking Reports

One more thing that I strongly recommend is to set up Tracking Reports by Majestic if you have an account. It would help you to build a base line of what happens over time. Tracking Reports are quite a cheap tool, but they deliver a lot of useful information: trust flow increasing, number of links increasing and so on. Plus you are tracking this information over the time, so you can see the improvement ad analyze the cost of improvement.

Ok after you got all this nice pictures and got the customer hooked, you move to audit stage.

Page Tab

Here Majestic offers some useful tools. One of them is Page tab – it has more than a list of URLs. When you type in the web site into Majestic site explorer, one of the tabs is Pages.  Instead of looking for citation flow and trust flow of the links to this site you are now looking at the page information on the web site. If you are having problem crawling web page you will get information about it. So, with the combination of Majestic and something like Deep Crawl you can very quickly pick up some information.

Anchor Text

Moreover, you can use Majestic to spot particularly anchor texts. So, if you’ve got a web site, where you overdone a particularly key word, you can go to Majestic and spot those negative keyword links, that are penalizing you.

anchor text

Link Profile Chart

This is an easy way of examining where the site is in Google profile. Every link coming to the site has trust flow and citation flow. On the Link Profile Chart we map all the incoming links. Quite often links have a high citation flow, but low trust flow and that is a dangerous sign because in the natural world both citation flow and trust flow should be about the same score. Links with a high citation flow, but low trust flow are considered to be bought links.

Bucket Lists

People spent hours on Majestic, but they don’t always have time to check web sites. Bucket Lists allows you to package your lists to look at them later.

Also, if you are an Excel user, there is a great SEO tool for Excel: Third party Excel Plugins. It allows you to use all the Majestic information straight from the web site.

You’ve already received the web site and if you are unlucky and you realize that you have a Penguin Phase. So, you have to fix some of the bad links. So, here are the main tools for that.

URL Submitter

The first thing I suggest is to create the database of all the links. You can export all the links that Google shows you – it could be up to 200 000 links, which is the maximum number of links you can upload to your URL Submitter. That will direct our crawlers saying if we have not crawled that URLs can we crawl in the next 24 or 48 hours. That will give you flow metrics for the URLs that are not seen.

Advance Report Filtering

You can then start filtering our reports. We have Advance Reports that allow you take some of the sets of link profiles. For example, you can filter your report based on delta of your citation and trust flow. Or you can take links coming from particular sources and sort them.

Reverse Clique Hunter

Another thing is a little trick with Penguin. We have a tool called Reverse Clique Hunter and you can use it to try unmasking link networks. If somebody has a sophisticated link network,

If you put 3 web sites that are on the penalized page into Reverse Clique Hunter, it will come with a lot of web sites linking to that are linking to the same 3 web sites. Then you can uncover the link network, so it could be a pretty cool use of that tool. I can advise some third party Penguin Plugins: Linkrisk, Urlprofiler.

Links Prospecting

Let’s move to another stage of Link Prospecting – getting some good links for your web site. Instead for looking for links for the whole day, Majestic offers you some tools to do that. We have changed our system recently: before if you were looking for TOP links Site Explorer would show you a lot of links from site A to site B, and now we show only unique links, so now you get much cleaner view of  any web sites’ strongest  links. And of course, you can look at the competitors and find out where they are getting their links from and to pull some of the strongest links.

link prospecting

Clique Hunter

You take the key word you are trying to look at Google, then you take 10 web sites that come in search results and put them into Clique Hunter. And it will bring all of the web sites linking to more than one web site from the list, so you can see where the hubs of authority are that you are not engaged with. There is a reason to do it this way, because when you put in web sites that are already ranking by Google, so they are not penalized. Therefore, common links of authority are unlikely to be penalized by Google.

Majestic Search Explorer

Not many of you know, but we are also a search engine as well. If you start with a key phrase in our search box instead of URL, then we return results that are the strongest …to get links from in the particular category. So you get results that give you quick targets from people you should approach in order to get quality links.

Why to use Majestic Search Explorer?

  • Contextualized trust
  • Flow
  • More than 1000 results
  • No personalization
  • Predict trending sites
  • Instant data

Topical Trust Flow

When you look at web sites, do you have a look at the topical trust flow of particular web site and make sure it is semantically close to your business? We see that topics and categories are more and more useful. If you are getting links from the sites that are semantically distant from your business then sooner or later you will face problems with random Google relevance. So, you must find initially the relevant content, not just the relevant sites.

topical trust flow

Final thing is reporting. Once you’ve got a customer, you’ve done links for them, then you may be able to review what you’ve done.

New and Lost Links

One of the main things is to have the ability to have a look at new and lost links on the daily basis.  If you go to new tab, it will show you what links were seen in the last 90 days and you can drag over the last 2 weeks and click on any to see the actual link. You also need to consider that Internet works the way that you can often get links from different parts of the web sites. A good example is WordPress – if someone is linking to you from WordPress site, it could be so that day 1 a link comes from a homepage, and day 2 from another page. We then count it as two different links. But still you get a pretty good picture on linking profile.

As for the reporting it is also very useful to do Tracking Reports as it gives understanding on what your competitors are doing. So, that’s pretty much it. As you see, there is so much information in a link: It can give information about content, relevance, reach, influence, intent, timeliness, meaning, power, context, passion.
